The past continuous tense is also known as the past progressive tense, it describes an action that was in progress at a specific point in the past. It is formed using the past tense of the auxiliary verb "to be" (was/were) and the present participle (-ing) form of the main verb. 


Positive Sentence:

For example: 

I was playing football.

"I was studying when you called."


Negative Sentence:

I was not playing football.


Interrogative sentences:

Was I playing football?

Were they learning their lesson?


It is also used to describe two actions that were happening at the same time in the past. 

For example: 

"I was cooking dinner while he was watching TV."


It can also be used to describe a background action in the past. 

For example : 

"He was listening the music while they were discussing"
